{this moment}

{this moment} - I am making this a Friday ritual for the spring and summertime. A single photo - no words - capturing a moment from the week. A simple, special, extraordinary moment. A moment I want to pause, savor and remember. Helping me to slow down, take notice and enjoy these longer days and warmth out doors.

Inspired by SouleMama.

Wishing you a lovely weekend!

Beginnings

Beginning

I made this painting last year, and as I'm sure you know already, my work often contains layers of allegory within the images. My titles allude to what I intend my images to mean, and unless prompted I often don't explain it with any more than those few words of the painting title. This painting is very close to my heart because the "beginning" that I was thinking about when I was working on it was my own children's beginning. Both of them growing inside their own little orbit or bubble. This is both literal, as they grew inside my womb, but also more about their childhood development, as they grow and develop into the people that they are meant to be, until they are strong, vibrant and fully autonomous, ready to fly away. It is not lost on me as I parent that I am really preparing my children to eventually (hopefully many years away) live without me, even though I can't conceive of such a time and part of me likes to think that they will always need me. This duality of joy and sorrow, love and loss, is a constant that I try not to forget in my work and life. I feel like this remembering makes the staggeringly beautiful times all that much more beautiful and captivating.

Yesterday, my family experienced one of these great joys, profound and stunningly beautiful. My dear brother and his lovely wife welcomed their first baby....this magnificent little girl Beatrix, born in England where they live.

I have been transfixed by the pictures of her, gazing at them, trying to discern which parts of her I recognize. So far she looks so markedly like both my brother and I at birth, rosy with a full head of blond hair.
I am aching to meet her, but we won't be able to hold her in person until we visit England this coming August, 4 long months away!
Until then I am just relishing this feeling of joy at their new beginning as parents, these times don't came along often.
Welcome to the world little Beatrix!

The Book Nook

We've been retreating to a magical place...
Where exotic horses keep watch,Dream boats sail on the wind, and through the window you can see far and wide.Welcome to our Book Nook, a place where we've spent quite a bit of time over this past winter. We converted the unused top bunk of Jasper's bed into a cozy den of cushions and blankets to snuggle and read in. We've been back there lately as the past few days have been gray, cold and rainy...visiting magic gardens,

and fairy lands.
After my big weekend with the craft fair last Saturday, I have needed some time to re-group. One thing that I realize every time that I do a fair is that it is so physically exhausting! Talking to people all day...like the lovely people who come by my table at a fair, totally exhausts me while it is fun at the same time. I think much of the problem is on my end, I get so caught up in the whirlwind of it all that I forget to give my self breaks to get up, walk around and have a bite to eat. I am reminded of how I felt when I used to teach art, I'd be just totally exhausted at the end of the day from being so "on" as the art teacher, using all of my energy to excite the kids about the projects that I was doing with them. I have also heard a theory that some people get energy from being around and talking with lots of other people, while some people are drained of energy in that same situation.
I think I must fall somewhere in the middle, but I'm sure glad that I got to have this cozy little break.

Out and About in Brooklyn

7th Avenue, Park Slope, Brooklyn

I love Brooklyn in the springtime, it feels like everything is waking up and everyone has a spring in their step.
Tomorrow, Saturday the 24th, I'll be selling my prints, wood mounted prints and stationary at the Prospect Heights Craft Fair from 11AM to 6PM. I will be sharing a table with my friend Kristin of Pixie Petals who makes the prettiest organic jewelry with lovely beads and hammered metal.
If you are in Brooklyn I'd love it if you'd stop by our booth for a chat and a cup of tea. The Craft Fair will be hosted by P.S. 9 at 80 Underhill Avenue, between St. Marks and Bergen. Directions and lots of other fun information are on the website. The other artists who will be at the fair look really creative, I always find lots of inspiration at craft fairs, seeing what other artists are working on and how they display their work really energizes me.
With all of this sunshine and warmer weather this week, I'm having dreams of sitting out at cafes, planting and spending lots of time in the park in the days to come.

Horizon

Horizon

I have always been drawn to Horizons. That point of intersection between the earth, sky and sea holds so much allure. There are the emotional and mental sort of horizons as well, when you can just feel something coming close...a breakthrough, or breakdown. You can catch glimpses of what's approaching, and gain insights into the bigger picture.
Inspired by Asian landscapes, enchantment and mystery this painting is about the possibility that Horizons hold.

I just added this new original painting to my shop, prints will be available soon.

The tale of our home renovation: part 5

Brace your selves, today I'm going to show you before and after pictures of our upstairs bathroom, and they are not pretty! These pictures will give you even more of an idea of the sorry state of things when we bought the house, and total lack of aesthetic care that had been put into it. The whole top floor, where our bedrooms and bathroom now are, had a drop ceiling (like you see in office buildings), dark wood paneling and linoleum. All of that had to be gutted, we actually hired a demolition crew to come in and take it all out. After the demolition we decided to make the bathroom bigger than it was before, as you will see in this "before" picture, the sink comes way out into the room...
Here it is after...
We added a claw foot tub (I'm a sucker for those) and shower, on the left as you enter the room. This "before" picture of the toilet area is pretty scary, I apologize, but now you know what we were dealing with!
Here is the toilet area after...
Frank made that beautiful slatted radiator cover, and I continued the turquoise tile theme with a small light blue glass tile all around the lower half of this room. I absolutely love this tile, it makes the room feel spa-like to me. I also chose a large slate tile for the bathroom floor that feels good under foot. In the next picture you can see how we bumped out the room to make a space for the sink.
Along the same wall as the sink we added a storage area with lots of built in shelving, along with space for a stacked washer/dryer. I can't tell you how much of a luxury it is in NYC to have a washer/dryer at home. Most people have to take their clothes to a laundry mat. After years of apartment living in my twenties, I still feel so lucky whenever I am just able to throw the kid's clothes right in the washing machine in our own bathroom! In the next part of the tale of our home renovation I'll show you more of the upstairs. I hope that your week is off to a good start!

Soul Dancer

Soul Dancer

I just finished this painting, and I am loving the COLORS that are coming out in the work right now. Spring time how I love you! It is as if a riotous rumba has happened on my painting palette and in my paintings in progress. I have been looking at Indian textiles and patterns, and thinking of exotic far away steamy lands while also rereading Eat Pray Love before bed each night, which is really just fueling my fire. This is one of my favorite books, I love following along on the author's journey of self discovery. The realizations that she has about herself along the way, as well as how she is able to articulate them in her writing, astound me. In the "pray" section of the book, while she is at an ashram in India, she talks about her Meditation practice in such a straightforward and simple way, which I am fascinated by as she is really talking about the depths of her soul. The way she describes the state of deep meditation that she attains makes me think of a soul dancing. A Soul Dancer. Prints of this new painting are available here in my shop.
I am so excited for the Eat Pray Love movie to be released later on this year, the movie looks so great in this trailer!

Thank you to Mimi Bird for mentioning my print Haven as one of her Friday Favorites today on her sweet blog.
Happy Weekending to you! I'll be posting another installment of our "before and after" home series soon!

The Brooklyn Botanic Garden

We spent this afternoon exploring one of our favorite places in NYC, the Brooklyn Botanic Garden. Nine years ago Frank and I had our first date to the annual Cherry Blossom festival there, and every year we go back when the Cherry Blossoms are blooming to remind us of the beginning of our relationship. We also were married there, which was amazing...and something that I'd like to post on eventually! Today we reveled in the glorious splendor of everything in bloom, these really are some of my favorite weeks of the year.

I'll be back tomorrow with a peek into what I've been working on in the studio lately.

Flip doll

For Carys's birthday she opened a special present from me this morning. I made her this cute Flip Doll, which I ordered as a kit by Umbrella Prints, and was a very satisfying sewing project for someone like me who is not an expert sewer but enjoys it!

Umbrella Prints designs and hand prints all of their fabrics which are so inspired and whimsical. For those of you that have never seen a Flip Doll, basically the skirt of the doll can be flipped up to reveal another face and another skirt underneath. This one has 3 layers, there is the laughing face...
the smiling face...
and the sleeping face...
They are all just adorable and Carys seems to think so too. I am excited that the kit came with fabric for 2 dolls, I'll be making the other one as a baby gift for my brother's baby girl, due at the end of this month!!P.S. On Sunday one of my wood mounted prints was featured as an "Etsy find" in one of their shopping guides! What a nice surprise, and has resulted in many sales and lots of traffic to my shop, which I am just catching up with! I feel very blessed and thrilled!

Three

Frank and Carys, about a half hour after her birth, in our bedroom.

Today she is three, as if that were possible, as if she will not always be this tiny baby in my mind's eye.

Every year I get very reflective on my children's birthdays, I marvel at the age that they are turning (how can it be!?), and relive their births in my head all day. I'm not sure if other mother's do this, but really for me their birthdays feel like a celebration of my own journey as a mama...and a time to reflect on their births from my own perspective. My experiences of giving birth to my children were so powerful, especially with Carys. I chose to have her at home, after having Jasper in a birthing center and knowing that I just feel more comfortable laboring in my own space.
She took her time, making me wait 14 days after her estimated due date, but my midwife was patient and encouraged me to be also. I prayed and pleaded for labor to start, and waiting all of those days was a torturous journey of its own in which I learned so much about letting go! On the night of the 14th day, at 11PM, my water broke and I was immediately in intense active labor. Carys was born less than 2 hours later at 12:56AM, 10 minutes after our midwife arrived. She came so quickly, so naturally. After waiting months to meet her, and wondering the whole time who she would be, I reached for her and placed her against my body on our bed and felt as if I just knew her...I already knew her soft presence.

Happy Birthday my Beautiful Girl!

Fairytale Fiesta

My little girl turns 3 tomorrow. We celebrated this past weekend with a Fairytale Fiesta, there was so much pink and so many tutus and fairy wings.

Frank and I, along with my parents, stayed up late the night before creating a fairy village out of cake and candy which was complete with the cutest herd of deer, that I found here. Each guest got to leave with a deer as part of the favors after the party.

We had a marvelous Fairy-fantastic time!

Simple Pleasures and Exotic Inspiration

Lately I've been inspired by...

Waking up early and having some quiet studio time before 7AM, the light coming in at that time of day is so soft and open, delicate even.

Smelling flowers on the air, with all of the Magnolias in bloom in our neighborhood and Prospect Park, it is so uplifting.

Loving this heavenly lotion by Indu called Nectar of the Moon, can you believe that name! It is hand made with the essential oils of bergamot, lavender and geranium, and the woman who makes the lotion mixes it with one essential mantra "om namah shivaya" which means "the thought that liberates and protects".
It smells so good that I left the bottle open on my studio table yesterday while I was working so that I kept catching whiffs of it.

I am feeling so inspired by this photo shoot in the sands of Morocco, completely transporting and energizing my fashion ideas for the coming summer.

Loving that light!

The Parlor

Welcome to the tale of our Brooklyn home renovation!
By way of introduction, here is a painting of our living room that Frank just finished, you can read his thoughts about it here. The renovation of our Brooklyn home has been Frank and my biggest collaborative creative project to date (unless you count our kids!) and I have had such fun chronicling it here. I have filled the tale with lots of "before and after" pictures, because I love seeing transformations.

Before and After: the tale of our home renovation...

Part 1: The tale of buying our house, and the before and after of the front of our building.
Part 2: Before and after of our living room (or the parlor as Frank likes to call it).
Part 3: Before and after of our kitchen.
Part 4: Before and after of our entry way and stairs.
Part 5: Before and after of our upstairs bathroom.
Part 6: Demolition and a Big Mess.
Part 7: Exploring our Deck.
Part 8: Before and after of the kid's room.
Part 9: Before and after of the master bedroom.
Part 10: Before and after of the garden level.
Part 11: Before and after: our front door, and the conclusion of the tale.

Her mittens

Before things warm up too much here, there are a couple of left over things from the winter that I wanted to share with you. This is a post about warm woolly mittens in the sweetest pinky-peach color, knit by my mother's mother when I was a little girl. She knit them for my oldest cousin Mondy (whose name is still sown inside these on a little tag), and then when they grew too small for her, these mittens were passed down to me. This holds true to my grandmother's family tradition where nothing was wasted and everything was reused.

All through this winter Carys has worn the mittens, and each and every time that she puts them on I think of my Grandmother. I think how amazing it is that something that she touched, knit together with her own hands, is now keeping my little girl's hands warm. My grandmother died the summer that I turned 16, and I don't have many things left in my possession that she touched. She was the kind of mother and grandmother who showed her love through making things for people. In most of my memories of her she is either at her sewing machine or working in her kitchen. I think that she would feel so proud that her great-granddaughter wore these mittens all winter...especially because truly nothing was waisted, not even a bit.
